David Michael Murray
b. December 23, 1956
Edmonton, London, England
Adrian Frederik Smith
b. February 27, 1957
Hackney, East London, England
The two are long time friends. They attended school together, and formed their first band together called Urchin. Adrian had bought his first guitar from Murray, a Woolworth’s Top 20.
Murray left Urchin in 1976 to join Iron Maiden, the new band of another local musician, Steve Harris.
Adrian would continue to front Urchin until joining Maiden in 1980 for the recording of the Killers Album.
Iron Maiden were among the leaders of the new wave of British heavy metal. Their sound was so original that they sold millions of records with little to no radio or video support.
Maiden are one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time and have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have played just over 2100 live shows during their career, and are credited as one of the most influential bands in rock history.
